20 New Books for the New Year!

Books for the New Year
New Year: New Books!

January is a great time to be a book lover!

To help you find the perfect book here is a quick review of twenty of our favorites for the new year.

Books in Baskets
1.  All the Light We Cannot See by Anthony Doer is one book we are super excited about!  It's a National Book Awardee for Literature.  It's the story about a blind French girl and a German boy whose paths collide in occupied France as both try to survive the devastation of World War II.

2.  Date Night In: More Than 120 Recipes to Nourish Your Relationship by Ashley Rodriguez.  Rekindle the Romance at Home!  Ashley and Gabe Rodriguez were determined not to let their relationship deteriorate into that of "roommates with children," so they instituted a weekly date night where they sauté, roast, mix and dice while reconnecting over simple dishes that you too can create in your own kitchen!

3.  Descent: A Novel by Tim Johnston is a literary thriller.  We think this review sums it up pretty expertly: “A riveting literary thriller of the can’t-stop-turning-the-page, stay-up-all-night variety.” —Alice LaPlante, author of A Circle of Wives

Book Basket Books4.  As You Wish: Inconceivable Tales From the Making of the Princess Bride by Cary Elwes.  A first-person account and behind-the-scenes look at the making of the cult classic film filled with never-before-told stories, exclusive photographs, and interviews with costars.

5.  Gray Mountain by John Grisham a legal thriller set in coal mining country.  Grisham's newer books also bring political messages into the story line and this one does as well.  On Amazon people seem to either love it (five star reviews) or hate it (one star reviews).

6.  Hush by Karen Robards.  In her latest heart-pounding thriller, a woman must uncover a murderer—or risk being the next victim of a vicious killer.

7.  Hope to Die an Alex Cross Thriller by James Patterson. Detective Alex Cross is being stalked by a psychotic genius, forced to play the deadliest game of his career.

8.  Jeter Unfiltered by Derek Jeter.  The only authorized full-color book commemorating Derek Jeter’s iconic baseball career with the New York Yankees.

9.  It Is Finished: 365 Days of Good News Inspiration by Tullian Tchividjian.  These short readings each contain a truth from God's Word that will set you on a solid foundation for the day.

10.  Lila: A Novel by Marilynne Robinson a National Book Awardee in Literature.  Marilynne Robinson, one of the greatest novelists of our time, returns to the town of Gilead in an unforgettable story of a girlhood lived on the fringes of society in fear, awe, and wonder.

11.  Mr. Monk and the New Lieutenant (TV show) by Hy Conrad.  An all-new story starring Adrian Monk by Edgar® Award–nominated Monk screenwriter and coexecutive producer Hy Conrad.  (Better than the "Castle" books.)  These are well done mystery stories everyone can enjoy reading.

Book Basket Books12.  Die Again: A Rizzoli and Isles Novel by Tess Gerritsen.  Another TV based book series that does a great job of bringing both tv and book fans together.  Detective Jane Rizzoli and medical examiner Maura Isles are back—and they’re going into the wild to find a killer. Die Again is the latest heart-pounding thriller in Tess Gerritsen’s New York Times bestselling series, the inspiration behind TNT’s hit show Rizzoli & Isles.

13.  No Fortunate Son: A Pike Logan Thriller by Brad Taylor.  We think this review says it best: “Edge-of-your-seat thriller...nonstop action, intricate story line, and jaw-dropping plot twists.” -- Publishers Weekly

14.
Rain on the Dead by Jack Higgins a Black Ops Thriller.  The past comes back to haunt Sean Dillon and his colleagues, as the New York Times–bestselling master of suspense returns with a knife-edge story of terrorism, revenge, and a very old nemesis.

15.  Robert B. Parker's The Bridge a Cole and Hitch Western.  The next gritty, gun-slinging entry in the New York Times–bestselling series, featuring itinerant lawmen Virgil Cole and Everett Hitch.

19.  What If? Serious Scientific Answers to Absurd Questions by Randall Munroe.  What if everyone on earth aimed a laser pointer at the moon at the same time? What if you could drain all the water from the oceans? What if all the lightning in the world struck the same place?  Get these answers and more in this humorous look at science.

20.  Saving Grace by Jane Green a Literary Thriller.  (If you liked Gone Girl you will like this book) Powerful and riveting, Jane Green's Saving Grace will have you on the edge of your seat as you follow Grace on her harrowing journey to rock bottom and back.

The most wonderful time of the year...until they leave for college

Parents eagerly await their kids heading back to school, and the entire family getting back into a comfortable routine.  Until their child turns 18 and heads off to college.  That happened to me this year and has inspired a new line of College Care Packages.

While we are excited for their journey ahead as parents we can't help but feel the loss.  The day to day interaction with the child we've been raising for 18 years is suddenly gone.  So the care package isn't so much for my student as for me.  It lets me be a small part of his life for just a little longer, and I like that.

If you want to read an amazing description of the experience of sending your child off to school click on over to this excerpt from Rob Lowe's book Love Life.   It's a tear jerker, but he expresses so beautifully what it's like to release one of your own out into the world.

You can read the excerpt here: http://www.slate.com/articles/life/family/2014/05/rob_lowe_on_sending_his_son_off_to_college_an_excerpt_from_love_life.html
